Default 2010 Cobalt - Oil Change

When do you all get your oil changes? Do you go by the oil change indicator? If so, what percentage do you allow it to get down to. I currently have appx 5400 miles on my 2010 Cobalt and the oil says it is at appx 58%.

Default Oil change

I bought mine brand new this year - had appx 12 miles on it when I got it. I'll routinely check the oil level and color to determine when I need to change it.

Default Miles on 2010 cobalt

I drive 100 miles (Round trip) daily for my work commute, plus whatever typical runaround weekend work. My husband has a 2009 Cobalt and has just over 53,000 miles on his - he travels regionally between Northeast Ohio and Western PA.

got my 09 in december with 24 miles on it. It has 24000 on the clock. I change my oil every 3K with synthetic and the filter every 2nd oil change (every 6K).

You are wasting lots of money if you change your oil every 3k miles. Especially if you're using synthetic oil. One of the advantages to synthetic is their ability to resist breakdown longer than dino(regular) oils.

My dad always changed the oil/filter every 3k miles religiously when I was growing up so that's what I did when I got my license and first car but as the years have passed oil has gotten better and engines are put together better even from the factory so I've changed my ways. At least as far as our daily drivers are concerned, anyway. My ZO6 and bikes still get their oil changed at 3k or less. After a weekend at the track they get fresh oil/filter regardless of miles.

But for "normal" street driving there's no need for such short oil change intervals nowadays. After break-in I went 5k miles and sent in a sample for analysis. They said I could try 8k if I wanted and that's what I did before this last oil/filter change. I haven't gotten the results back from the sample yet but I would bet all is fine and I could likely go longer if I wanted. I've tried pretty much all of the major brands over the years and after using dino oil for break-in I've used Mobil 1 synthetic 0w30 in the Balt since then. Along with Purolator PureOne filters which the lab always praises for doing a good job.

If you are still under warranty i think you have to change it every 3k or the warranty voids??? is that right
