Default Fuel Pump issues

Has anyone else had fuel pump issues?

Mine was leaking gas and it was one of the moldings on the top of the pump, its made from plastic and it cracked. We took it out, plastic welded it back together and it worked for a few months then it did it again, replaced it with an SS pump, but is there a reason for the failure or did I just get lucky? I really do not want to have keep replacing these, they aren't cheap.
