Default Transmission problem?? HELP!

My automatic 2005 LS is now sitting still. I was driving down the road one day and my car became quieter than usual and as I was pressing the accelerator it wasn't going any faster. My fiance' drove it and found out that it won't go past the 2nd gear. He said it might be the transmission control module. Is he right? I really need to get it fixed and if anyone else has had this issue or is a mechanic do you know how much it would cost?
Any input would be great.
Thanks.
