Is there anyway finding out if my car was fixed for the recall or is it just something I have to have someone look at?

Take it to the service section and have them get you a copy of your "GM Vehicle Inquiry System Summary" its a nice little sheet that tells you when your warranties expire and what recalls have been done and other work on it.

That's how it was when I had my 99 Grand am also with the dealer because I was only 20 at the time.
Of course they gave me a 95 Grand Prix with 110,000 miles. This was in 2000.
My car had 12,000 miles at the time.

All I've ever had insofar as rentals go is a 4door balt, 2 impalas and a malibu, all newer models. Ran one of the impalas into my buddies mazda long story.
