Make Exhaust Quieter? (2006 Cobalt LT 2.2)

Hi everyone,

About a couple of years ago I bought and installed an aftermarket exhaust system with a 3" (I think) exhaust tip. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions/ideas to help make the exhaust system quieter; the loud, throaty noise is starting to get annoying.

Only bought it to improve performance...most it did though was bump my MPG up about 4-5 miles.

Thanks in advance

How much of your exhaust system has been replaced? Do you have a resonator and muffler? What size and types?

Ideally you'll have a really long resonator that's nearly the length of the straight section after the catalytic converter under the car, and a multi chamber muffler.

If you're lacking any of those or are running a fart can then yeah, it'll probably sound like garbage.

Flowmaster has a nice scale for their mufflers. I ran a Flowmaster 40 on my LT and it was obnoxiously loud.

Thanks, it doesn't sound like a fart can though lol. It just has a loud deep rumble and I'm getting tired of it. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/QKgAAOSwQJhUhjUn/s-l300.jpg

^^ I have a system just like this one. I'm guessing my easiest bet would to just replace it with a system like this one:

I'm assuming thinner pipes that are the size of the OEM ones would quiet it down.

Thanks for you reply

Thinner pipes might, but it'll probably knock your MPG back down. You can probably just swap out the muffler from that straight through design to one that is chambered like a 50 series Flowmaster or similar.

Been thinking about this, I doubt the more open/loud exhaust would help MPG, what did was your not enjoying the extra noise and it adjusted your driving style, encouraging lower rpms.

By thinner I'm assuming you really mean smaller diameter. Bought a junk nissan truck from a nephew, fabed his own exhaust with side exit just below drivers door, annoyiing loud even for him, he covered about half of the exhaust tip with a piece of steel, created enough restiction to be OK to drive. If going to toss the exhaust try to modify the tip for cheap first, not quite a bananna in the tail pipe but something along those lines.
