TDC and broken Timing Chain

I just bought an 05 Cobalt SS from a friend. He says the timing chain fell off when trying to start it. I can only assume that the tensioner malfunctioned or wasn't torqued right. He said there was also coolant in the oil so the head is coming off anyways (as i can look for damage also if the chain did actually break). What is the best/easiest method for setting the engine to TDC if the timing chain is not on it?

I know this isn't what you asked, but don't forget the LSJ is NOT a non interfering engine. That means when the chain fails the valves and pistons collide. If the engine was running at any sort of speed when it failed you likely have valve and possible piston damage. Inspect all that carefully before pouring a bunch of money into what could possibly be just a boat anchor.
