shift knobs

I was just wondering if most aftermarket shift knobs would fit on my car. I've seen crappy autopart knobs and they all have the plastic adapters and are screw on. But are the nice name brand ones made to fit our cars? I don't know if they work since mine has the notch on the shifter where it makes the knob align and also I know the boot twists on to keep it in place. So do you guys know of any that work this way? Or have any of you already swapped shift knobs? If so have any pics and info? I really want a aftermarket shifter but don't know where to go so any help would be appreciated
