I have checked the suspension and the mounts along with the rack and tie rods. It will also make a little noise if you wiggle the wheel with the car shut off and it sounds like its coming from the cabin. With the door shut you can't hear it outside the car.

hmm maybe excessive backlash between the electric motor and the steering shaft. Or a binding joint...

So can I unbolt the motor and see if it has play in it or is there something special that needs to be done?

I don't know if it is a single unit. i have never looked but if u can grab the shaft and try to turn it or the wheel and see if u can feel any freeplay from the steering wheel. you said if you wiggle the wheel with the car shut off and it sounds like its coming from the cabin. see if u can feel the noise.

One last thought it's a little major. The wheel play it could be one of your hub bearing.... We had a 2001 buick and at 40_45 the car would shake and the steering left loose..

I am having an issue with a rattle in the front end of the car and I think it has something to do with the power steering motor. After having it replaced on the recall I picked up a rattle that have got worse to the point that at around 10 to 15 mph it sounds like the steering column is coming apart. My question is can a guy just unbolt the motor and check for play or is it more complicated than that?

Has your concern been resolved? I would also be willing to look into this for you with more information. Please feel free to contact me privately for more assistance. Thank you in advance.
