On December 23rd, my key fob suddenly stopped working. Tried the battery in the fob, no luck. Soldier joint looks fine. Since I get up so early I borrowed my in-laws car so that I wouldn't have to set off the alarm unlocking the doors with the key. I've needed things out of my car at various points in the day this week so I quickly unlock and start it to shut off the alarm. Worked totally fine. Generally always starts on the first try. Battery and alternator were both replaced in 2015 as they both crapped out together. Car really hasn't given me any issues that I couldn't resolve fairly easily and with the help of Google. This morning I needed my phone charger so I did my usual unlock and hurry to start it and when I went to start it, the car tries to start but it won't turn over. Don't think the key fob has anything to do with it but it gave background as to what was going on. The engine light came on but my new mechanic said it was a sensor that I needed to replace and the only issue I had was that it would take 2 tries to start my car immediately after fill up and it would tell me randomly to check my gas cap. I'm hoping it's something simple like a starter since my car has 160,000 miles on it. My old mechanic hasn't done a great job keeping it tuned up so that's why I'm going elsewhere and getting stuff caught up on it. Thanks for the advice!

Just add to the conundrum, just had the key fob tested and it is perfectly fine so I don't know if there is now an electrical issue in the entire car causing a problem or it there are 2 separate problems.

Sounds like you might have an issue with the remote or remote receiver. The remotes are notorious for the battery clip coming off. A simple solder job fixes the issue.

As for your no start problem, do you have any check engine lights? The fuel fill cap message is usually due to the fuel tank not being able to create enough vacuum, which can be things other than the fuel fill cap but it's cheap and easy enough to just toss a new one at it.

Aluminum foil and super glue are fine tools to get an old keyfob working again.
