I am changing the thermostat on a 2005 cobalt with 2.2 and I am extremely frustrated at how difficult it is to just simply install a thermostat in this car. The problem is that the water pump pipe that comes across the engine and meets the thermostat housing is not allowing me enough room to just slide the thermostat out to replace it. its ridiculous!! Is there any special tricks that I should be doing?

I changed the thermostat on my daughter's 2007, 2.2L. It was very simple. I just used a socket wrench and extension. I think the whole process took me 10 minutes.

I too changed a thermostat on one of the 2.2 motors and found it to be quite easy with that one. Two bolts and then it pulls up and away.

Yeah man, it's super simple as long as you have a large extension; and I'm not even that car savvy.
I just replaced mine 2 weeks ago.
You might also want to move some of the wires out of the way, but the pipe itself you can just work around it.
