I have replaced the gas cap five times and even had the oxygen sensor replaced. Yet the check engine light still comes on for a smog leak. I now have a Chevy dealership gas cap, I tighten it over three times, and it still has the check engine light on. I am not going to spend any more money on this car because of a simple gas cap. I have already checked and had the oil changed even though it didn't need it, had the fuel filter even replaced even though it didn't need it, and even went so far as replacing the spark plugs.

I've done everything but a voodoo priestess dance for this car, so I need to know what will actually remedy this check engine light regarding the smog leak and gas cap issue. I am tired of being ripped off by the dealership.

Thank you!

Hey Sara,
Do you happen to have the actual code that your car is throwing? There are a few reasons for your issue, the code MAY help to narrow it down slightly.

My 2003 took 6 years to figure it out. I struggled with this. As it turned out, the purge valve on top of the engine apparently stops working properly after a year. So, at first I never suspected the newly replaced purge valve and spent money on everything else, smoke testing pressure testing new gas cap etc.

Sara, post up the year and model I;ll check if the 2003 LT evap system is designed the same as yours.
Also, in NJ you can get through inspection with one 'not ready' OBDII monitor test. Meaning, clear the check engine light, fill gas tank full, drive a week (topping off gas tank every day), then go to the inspection station.

I found a fuel leak that caused the same thing. Light went out after leak was fixed. 2 leaks. First one was in rusted fuel lines in the rear which is common for Cobalts. Then a few years later fuel was leaking going into the fuel filter. Just letting you know my horrible experience with that light!

I had my fuel line replaced after it ruptured, yet my check engine light still comes on here and there. It does go out on it's own. I have found what triggers it to come on right away, is when I turn the A.C. on. Then when not on, again it eventually goes out. Strange...I kind of get used to it, but if I ever have a "true" engine problem, I will never know it, because I just ignore the light now. As well as the tire pressure low light, which is false, because when tested, the tires are always fine.
