Hi everyone - I'm looking at a 2007 Cobalt LT as a possible first car for my son. I haven't gone to look at it yet, just saw the add today and was intrigued. I haven't really had a Cobalt in mind, but this sounds promising. It's advertised as 'very clean. Always garaged. 62000 miles, one owner'. sedan, asking $4200

I've bought plenty of used cars, and I know that every make & model has their issues that are special to them. I'd really love to hear from you guys what I should be on the look out for? Any years to stay away from? Any issues that will certainly need to be dealt with? Please let me know the good, bad and the ugly.

Look underneath at the gas tank area and see if there is any staining from fuel leakage or run it for a few miles and when you stop and while it is still running go to the rear sides and look for gas leaking or odor of gasoline. See this thread :

Also, there are some with a problem in the electric power steering. I think there is a recall for that. And there are some that experience front end wobble problems. That need the rack & pinion replaced.
Other than the typical used car problems, 62K miles is a rare find and $4200 is an OK price especially if it is straight bodied and has been garaged.
If you can get the VIN you can contact GM to see if any of the recalls or special service bulletins apply to it and if they were done.

In my experience the 2.2 liter engines have good longevity
The 2.4 liter engines tend to have timing chain issues.
