what does he use to hold the hood up? (and please dont say "his hand"...lol)

I stick from a shovel or my head lol.Most of the time a stick.For shows were gonna use a coil spring

For the hood strut you can do what Cobalt Tom did and drill a hole thru the arm of the strut to where you can put a cotter pin in it to hold the hood. Just drill a hole thru the center and then another at the end that connects to the car so you have a place to put your pin when it's not in use. Also gotta vent the gas from the shock by tapping a small hole in the strut body.

this....the only reason my bows up on the driver side is because i kept the stock hood strut and it pushes up slightly...
