Possible transmission (automatic) issue? Not sure.

Everytime I get in my car and put the car into drive or reverse, there is always a clunk immediately after I shift into one of those gears. Im assuming the sound is it engaging whichever gear I put it in. Im not sure whether this is in fact a transmission issue but I just need some insight on what is going on.

I've never owned one with an auto, but iirc there should be a small clunk going into gear.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a small clunk, it's kind of loud. Not extremely loud but loud enough to turn heads once put into gear. It's never done it before that's why I'm quite concerned. Any suggestions? Anyone?

How many miles? It might need a transmission fluid change.

Hey Cmon Son,

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing this clunking sound when trying to put your Cobalt in drive or reverse. This would definitely be frustrating! I do see that you’re currently getting feedback from YelloEye and Andy. However, definitely let me know if there is anything I can do to assist. I would be more than happy to look into this concern further for you and get in touch with your dealer. If interested, please send me a private message at any time with your VIN, mileage, full contact info and the name of your preferred local dealership.

Best regards,

Hey Shane, I actually took my car today to the dealership I purchased it from. I dropped it off and told the male working in the service department the issue I was dealing with and he said his technician would take a look at the transmission. I hope it can be resolved.

Could be a bad motor mount or transmission mount like The Other Andy said. Have a look at yours. There should be 4 total.

Hi Cmon Son,

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear that you were able to get your vehicle over to your purchasing dealer for them to take a look. I would still be happy to look into this further on my end and communicate with your dealership. Please don’t hesitate to send me a private message with the requested information from my earlier post, if you would like our assistance. Definitely keep us all updated here on the forum, and I will be sure to look out for any incoming messages from you.

Best,

Hey guys, so I was told my motor mounts were in bad shape so the dealership replaced all of them but I still hear the clunking sound when I go into reverse and drive. I told the dealership that the sound still existed so the technician came out to the car and spoke to me as he was putting the car into drive and reverse, he says that the clunking sound is completely normal in the GM cars, the backlash of the gears. He says it's worse when the car isn't fully warmed up. I was a little skeptical so I brought it to a mechanic I trust and he checks the sound and also says "that's normal in these cars" (GM). I trust his word but it still bothers me that I hear that sound. I don't know guys. I guess it's normal?

Really? Wow that's crazy. It can be LOUD at times which left me skeptical, especially it never happening when I first got the car, but it is what it is if it's supposed to be like that.
