Well this is what we did.......spectra pieces (4 I think) and k&n filter made a huge difference.

Does anyone have any pictures of the stock airbox mod? I am thinking about it..

For which motor? There's 2 different airboxes and 2 different air box mods for the brick air box. You could check the how to section, I think there's a couple good photos there.

I think I have the 2.2L I did see in one of the how to sections about an air box mod, but none of the pictures would come up for me.. has anyone else had that problem?

what is the easiest way to know which motor i have?

Your best bet is to use this picture and go to your local auto part store and try to match up the pieces. As for taking out the silencer there is a few decent how to articles even though the pics dont work should be easy to figure out. I know on Spectres site they also have a section of pipe for the MAF sensor. I personally havent done this but I am in the same boat and plan on doing this same thing when I get home. So if you do it make a how to thread so in the future people can use it.

I wont get home until the end of October. Alaska is quite cold at that time of year so it probably wouldnt be till next summer. I do have a K&N drop in filter I just picked up for $20 brand new with free shipping got to love amazon.
